At pre-K pickup, the teacher that had Nik last year & now has piño told me how lucky I was. I smiled and thanked her. She continued to tell me how I have such good boys- that they’re so well behaved. In all my years of work in the field, I’ve never learned more about connecting deeply and meaningfully with a child, than I have by being my son’s mother. ⠀ ⠀ I love science. It’s where I come from. I believe it’s essential; one of the most important channels of knowledge available to us. It’s thorough, applicable and incredibly useful. Its also oftentimes [black and white], and that’s what I’ve known in practice for the past 10+ years...⠀ ⠀ But, being a mom has shown me that there’s a time and place for [grey]. A humbling, bewildering, heart-bursting-at-the-seams, place for grey. ⠀ ⠀ It’s here in the grey that I’ve also connected so deeply with other mamas, muddling through that same messy + beautiful shade, that’s simply, well... motherhood. ⠀ ⠀ So thank you, my boy - for showing me perspective; the unexpected light and wonder of that special place. We did so much reading today. I read a book.to him to start our day (which he had me read twice ), he read the first chapter of Frog and Toad and he read the Kind book. For Language Arts I had 2 stories to read to him. Then...the Bigfoot book, which he requested, arrived in the mail today so of course we HAD to read it. Somehow though we still got everything done. He got 100% on a math test. I taught him a fun addition yahtzee game I saw in another homeschooling page and we did all the "boring" worksheets. We also have a science experiment going that we can't mess with for 2 days. #firstyearhomeschoolers

Imagine if you put your little one to bed and you knew that they would stay in bed and stay asleep! What would your evenings look like without the bedtime fear or anxiety of nighttime waking? I know these feelings well! I talk to lots of parents who spend hours getting their wilful toddler into bed and once they’ve gone to sleep they’re waiting for the wake ups to start. One of the things I did after Ida and Toby’s sleep settled down was join a book club. I’ve always loved to read but I didn’t have the time or energy when I was in the depths of sleep deprivation. But now I meet with a lovely group of ladies every month, we have the best time normally laughing until our faces hurt! And I’ve read some of the most interesting books that I would never have chosen myself. This wouldn’t have been possible 2 years ago. What would you do with your extra time in the evenings? GO TO BED - FALL ASLEEP 😴 If only it were that straightforward. Bedtime is a time of huge separation for little ones, as it’s the longest time they are away from you. The way that you deal with it can have a big impact on whether they are prepared and ready for that separation. It will not only directly influence the length of time it takes for them to fall asleep, but whether they have a restful night (or one with multiple wakes ). Here are a few tips to help bedtime go smoothly: 🛏 The 2-3 hour period leading to bedtime should not be overlooked. A child needs a period where they can expel excess energy from their day, followed by some quiet/calm time. 🛏 Spend as much 1:1 time with them as you can manage leading to bedtime. This will fill up their ‘love tank’, helping them to feel safe, secure and loved, so that the separation is a little easier. 🛏 Help their bodies prepare for sleep by turning off any TV’s and devices. Reduce artificial lights as much as possible. This will allow Melatonin, the sleepy hormone, to be released. 🛏 Introduce a 30 minute bedtime routine, with activities that are calming and relaxing. It should be the same activities, in the same place, at the same time every night (or wherever possible! ). 🛏 Change your own mindset to bedtime. It should be a time of connection not a rush to get them to sleep. Your child will notice the difference!! 🛏 Make their room cool and don’t be tempted to wrap them up in lots of layers. A baby that is cooler will sleep better than a baby that is hotter (overheating is also a SIDS risk ). 🛏 Stress is the biggest prohibitor to sleep, so if they won’t settle or get upset, work on calming them down as quickly as possible and put sleep on the back burner. That darn saying really is true...comparison IS the thief of joy. This is so important to keep in mind when you're with mommy groups or scrolling through Instagram. Each baby develops and hits milestones at their own pace. I had the LATEST walkers...but guess what? They can all outrun me now when I'm trying to chase them down! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is so true as well when it comes to sleep. I can be working with 3 babies all the same age. Each will hit sleep goals at different weeks. 🤒 ACHOOO!!!💥 You and your baby’s sleep has been on track for months, and then disaster strikes: Your baby is sick! Whether it’s a common cold or an ear infection, it can really throw you and your baby off track. 😕 Few things can disrupt a great routine like illness. While you are spending all your extra time cuddling and comforting them, you might expect them to want to sleep more! But it turns out they only want to sleep more in your arms. The first few times Henry got sick @chadobryhim and I took turns rocking him through the night. And I thought the sun would never rise! 🍼 Often when your little one is sick, your pediatrician will recommend more fluids through the night. Try to avoid doing this every single night as your kiddo will be more likely to expect continued feedings and will get off-schedule. 🙏 Ultimately, you may have to start re-training. And that’s OKAY! Remember to give yourself some extra grace. Don’t forget that you know better than anyone what your baby needs when they are sick. And nobody else can meet those needs for them the way you can! Cold & flu season will be anything but normal in 2020. This parenting thing is hard. And then? We go on instagram, or we go to our playdate's house, and we compare compete compare.🙃 The comparison game might kill us all. One year, at a birthday party for my kid, I slaved over blowing up balloons for hours, making the perfect cake, getting the perfect gifts, I decided not to clean my house. One mom walked into my house and the first thing she said to me was, "Wow what a MESS!”😞 I'm sort of done pretending to be the mom that I'm not, just to make another mom happy. To avoid the judgement. To get them to like me. To look more like the other moms look on instagram. Maybe if we portray (on instagram and in person ) a wider variety of moms, and we boldly show the type of mom we are NOT, we can all let that piece of us go. That piece of us that feels guilt for not doing an activity or craft for the 600th day in a row. That piece of us that puts a filter over our tired mom face before posting the pic. That piece of us that cleans the one corner of our house the photo is taken in before snapping the photo. You're a good Mom if: ✔️ You love crafts. ✔️ You hate crafts. ✔️ Your house is meticulously cleaned. ✔️ Your house is a disaster zone. ✔️ You cut foods into shapes. ✔️ You serve pre-packaged foods. ✔️ You do your hair and makeup. ✔️ You live in sweatpants 24/7. ✔️ You live blissfully everyday. ✔️ You're surviving every day. Let's embrace the moms that we ARE rather than focusing on what we are not. Stop trying to be liked by everybody.
