A beautiful afternoon in Portland, just right for a socially distant story on the sidewalk. 🐶 I had a read aloud of Tromper's Tale of Courage, with accompanying flute music (played by my daughter Anna❤️ ), for the neighbor children. We ended with a neighborhood project to look for joyful moments (even the little things that bring us joy ) and share them on our tree for the next couple of weeks. I am hoping our tree will be uplifting for all that go by it. 😍 Practicing appreciation to build resilience, perseverance and connection. In case you didn’t know…I love going deep and sharing about emotional childhood trauma and our upbringing because I believe it sets the foundation for how we get to experience life from thereon, at least until we become aware that we can change our current experience if it’s not what we want it to be. In fact, at almost 35 years old, I have learned that I can trace every single time I am triggered, feel some huge emotion about someone or something that has happened, back to a childhood experience. You may have heard that from birth to about 7 years old, a child’s subconscious mind has been mostly programmed. What does this mean? It means that during our childhood development, we learn to make sense of the world, create beliefs, behaviors and habits (which we often describe as “personality” ), based on our experiences and the meaning others assign to it. In other words, we learned that something was “bad” or “good” because someone (usually a parent or primary caregiver ), taught us that or based on the limited meaning we were able to make out of a certain situation. So as adults, we see the world from our own life perspective (and the way we have experienced life in childhood ), our own goggles (This is why I am so fascinated by Social Psychology, self-help and anything to do with the mind ). We also make decisions and react the way we do based on our beliefs, values, morals, which most were learned from childhood. I didn’t know any of this until a few years ago, so was super shocked to learn that who I thought I was, really wasn’t who I truly was but some sort of avatar that I had created based on survival. I became what I thought others wanted me to be: golden child, well-behaved, overachiever, super hardworking, responsible, reliable, self-less, my parent’s right hand, everyone’s cup of tea, etc. And the truth is, I have lived most of my life on survival mode and for 3 decades, knew nothing but drama and stress. I became addicted to drama and stress and learned that these ways of living gave me connection to others, so it made sense to keep operating this way. ***continued in comments***

This is a little letter board in my house. It used to say “Satan watches you sleep” after my husband decided that SANTA watches you sleep just wasn’t quite right. But this symbolizes a lot in my life right now. And I bet a lot for your life too. We’ve got a lot of shit going on right now universally that feels never ending. And most of us probably have personal things that feel never ending. I know I do. But most things in life are temporary. They might be long as fuck and treacherous and painful and demoralizing... but most things are temporary. Sometimes we all need the reminder that “this too shall pass.” I need this reminder for myself today, hence the change in the letter board at my house. Maybe it will help you too 💜

If we focus solely on nervous system regulation and self-healing, but don't acknowledge and work to change systemic oppression, we are missing a fundamental piece of the puzzle. There are so many nervous system centered and trauma-informed practices that can feel soothing, validating, and supportive. That can help us feel regulated and resourced even within the systems and world we live in. But if you are struggling to feel resourced and regulated even with trauma-informed practices in your tool kit, it might feel validating to know that: -It is challenging to heal entirely on our own; humans are built for co-regulation -We are wired to adapt to our surroundings -The systems we live in impact our nervous system and physiology So by all means, let’s engage in more nervous system centered and trauma-informed practices. And, let’s work toward a world without oppression. Our systems need healing, too.
