Sleeeeep. I have never been one of those people who can survive on limited sleep. A night or two of not getting a decent sleep and I'm wrecked. ⠀ .⠀ I'm cranky, I start getting a sore throat, my eating habits default to carbs on carbs... it's not good for anyone. ⠀ .⠀ It's not exactly compatible with having 3 kids (although they're thankfully pretty awesome sleepers touch wood ). ⠀ .⠀ When I get to sleep I want to fall asleep fast and stay asleep, or at least not wake up for a reason other than a child needing me. ⠀ .⠀ Lavender Peace is my absolute saviour. A veces no puedo dormir… Desde que soy mamá, muchas cosas han cambiado, como por ejemplo mis horas de sueño.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Es normal; el instinto para cuidar a los peques está latente por naturaleza, pero además de la maternidad, el estrés por el que estamos pasando con la pandemia, facilita que el insomnio aparezca: no poder dormir, despertarse sin razón, dormir de forma superficial, despertarse cansado…⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ¿Te ha pasado?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Pero… tener un sueño reparador, es ESENCIAL para mantener tu salud y para eso tienes que convertirlo en una prioridad.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Si nos esforzamos porque los niños duerman bien para que su reparación celular sea de calidad. ¡Nosotros debemos hacer lo mismo!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ A los bebés y niños les gustan las rutinas: la hora del baño, leer un cuento, canciones… Pues con los adultos es igual y por eso es tan importante tener una buena higiene de sueño.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ¿Necesitas ideas?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ✨Busca tú rutina para dormir: Encuentra actividades relajantes que te ayuden a desconectar. Tu alimentación es un factor clave. 👶3. GENUINE HUNGER VS HABITUAL HUNGER👶 This is probably one of the most confusing aspects of night sleep.... No one wants to cut night feeds or attempt to drop night feeds when your baby is genuinely hungry! Working out if your baby needs their night feeds we can look at 3 things to help us make that decision. One: are they reverse cycling? This often happens around 3-4 months and quickly settles in as a habit. Your baby is reverse cycling if you feel they feed better at night than they do in the day.... They take big full feeds at night, but are quick or fussy in the day. Possibly in this situation you need to drop a night feed and increase day calories gradually to reverse the situation. Two: Is your baby hungry for their first feed of the day? Looking at how hungry they are at 7am is a good way to work out if their night feed is putting them off their breakfast feed. If it is, we know that in 24 hours calories will remain the same because we can shift them from 3am to 7am. Three: Is your baby established on solids? If they are, and they're still waking for more than 1 feed a night, we can be pretty confident if nutrition is in check that those feeds are habitual. Once you know a feed is habitual or genuine hunger you can form a plan to increase day calories, or teach settling without a feed at night. S L E E P (or lack of ) 😴 • • • So let's talk sleep. Noar is down to 2 naps and his naps usually are an hour each. Bed time tends to be between 7-8 but recently is fighting his sleep and will not actually be usleep until 10-11 🤯 our sleep routine hasn't changed, bath, book, bed but getting him to sleep has become a nightmare! Not sure if he is going through a sleep regression or is teething but it is so frustrating that he takes so long to get to sleep. Any suggestions for getting him down sooner? • B A T H T I M E • Did you know that depending on what time you bath your baby, can cause sleep wakings/disturbances within the first few hrs of putting bub down to sleep?! No?! Who would have thought, huh! Children 2 and under cannot yet regulate their own body temperature and it can take up to 2hrs for them to get back to a normal range. Although this may not affect every bub, if your baby is continuously waking up for the first few hours after being put down for bed, try moving bath time to an earlier time. This will allow time to warm back up or cool down and therefore feel more comfortable once placed to bed. My bedtime routine has slipped terribly. I’m back to early am bedtimes with mindless phone scrolling to get myself to sleep. I could blame the baby but the reality is, many nights the baby has been asleep for hours before I finally go to sleep. It’s a vicious cycle of self neglect because the next day I rely heavily on caffeine and sugar to get me through. I’ve filled my bedroom diffuser 3 times in six weeks. Let's Talk about dream feeds. ➡️ How do you know when a dream feed is working? 💤 The idea of a dream feed is that if you feed your baby (without waking them ) before you go to bed, they will be full enough to sleep a longer stretch at night. This means you get to avoid baby waking at 2:30 or 3:30 am Truth be told, dream feed isn't always a dream. For some babies, it interrupts their deep sleep and makes it difficult for them to go back to sleep. If this is your experience (at least 3-4 nights ), then I would advise you to drop the dream feed and stick to something else that works for you. Have you tried dream feeding? What challenges did you experience?

Welcoming a new Peter to my bedroom, he may not be hairy but he sure is shiny and has great bells. He is my new German alarm clock (bit on the 'side' table ), farewell 'helpful' Alexa and the stress inducing repetion of 26 times shouting "What is the time?" only for her to reply at levels loud enough to fill the 02. He ticks. I like it. The phone stays downstairs. He likes that. I sleep better. I am then a better human. The housemates seem easier to live with. If I get good sleep anything is possible. Recently I reached out to an old school friend who also has a young child. We hadn’t spoken in years and I realised she lived nearby so I thought I would initiate a conversation in the hope I would find someone who was like me. I asked her about the first few months of motherhood and how she found it. This was how she described it. “Deliciously tired.” 🤔 —————————— When I first read it, I was so confused. So many thoughts going through my head such as - People enjoy being tired? Is she serious? Why don’t I feel deliciously tired rather than f*cking knackered? Am I wrong to not feel grateful that my child is here safe and sound when so many others aren’t? And most importantly, what do I say back? ************* I chatted to another friend about it and she said “nothing fun about being tired.” My friend is absolutely correct. Of course you expect some level of tiredness to come from having a baby, that is inevitable. I was not however, prepared for how long it would take for my child to sleep for longer than two hourly stretches 🥱 There seems to be so much ‘competition’ about who can survive on the least amount of sleep in Motherhood without realising that actually, when someone says they’re struggling with sleep regardless of whether they have a child or not; you can give advice, tips or even say ‘I’m sorry to hear you’re not sleeping well.’ In a world that is so uncertain, be kind. Laying Grayson down on the softest cot sheets I have ever felt (gifted @mamadesigns ) I ponder Motherhood and the perpetual battle of whether to go to bed early so as to stand a fighting chance of getting through the next day or whether to soak in as much peace & quiet as possible. The allure of having precious time to myself always prevails. But let me get one thing straight.....just because I am staying up late binge watching Netflix & scrolling through my phone does not mean I am not EXHAUSTED it just means that once I know all the cubs are peacefully sleeping I can finally breathe and enjoy some quiet uninterrupted time that I so desperately need. When you explain to your husband how exhausted you are from your day of toddler tantrums, food fights, nappy explosions, nap-time refusals and endless questions who is met with “you should go to bed earlier then, why don’t you go to bed straight after you put the kids to bed tonight?” I’ll tell you why darling..... 😴Because I want to zone out and just sit & do nothing for the first time in the 15 hours I’ve been awake 😴Because I just need some time to myself in the quiet with noone needing me....to help them get dressed, to ferry them to and from school and clubs, to wipe their bums, to play hide & seek, to make them endless snacks, to read with them and cuddle them & be there for them with everything I have 😴Because those seconds after the kids finally fall asleep are literally the first seconds of solitude I have had all day....every toilet trip I took was taken with a small child pulling on the pants around my ankles😩 😴Because even though my body is done in, my mind is still racing and I need time to make sense of everything running through it, making lists & emptying it ready for another day of mind chaos 😴Because I need to order our weekly groceries that I’ve been meaning to do since the start of the week (haven’t you wondered why we’ve had “Italian night” aka pasta for the last 4 nights for dinner? ) 😴Because I want to aimlessly scroll through Facebook, catch up on YouTube videos & watch Netflix. 😴 Sometimes this sense of peace is simply more important than sleep no matter how shattered I am. A veces no puedo dormir… Desde que soy mamá, muchas cosas han cambiado, como por ejemplo mis horas de sueño.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Es normal; el instinto para cuidar a los peques está latente por naturaleza, pero además de la maternidad, el estrés por el que estamos pasando con la pandemia, facilita que el insomnio aparezca: no poder dormir, despertarse sin razón, dormir de forma superficial, despertarse cansado…⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ¿Te ha pasado?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Pero… tener un sueño reparador, es ESENCIAL para mantener tu salud y para eso tienes que convertirlo en una prioridad.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Si nos esforzamos porque los niños duerman bien para que su reparación celular sea de calidad. ¡Nosotros debemos hacer lo mismo!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ A los bebés y niños les gustan las rutinas: la hora del baño, leer un cuento, canciones… Pues con los adultos es igual y por eso es tan importante tener una buena higiene de sueño.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ¿Necesitas ideas?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ✨Busca tú rutina para dormir: Encuentra actividades relajantes que te ayuden a desconectar. En mi caso me doy una ducha, leo un poco y hago una sesión de respiración consciente.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ✨Al menos unas tres horas antes de dormir trata de apagar o bajar las luces y de preferencia no uses ordenador, tv ni móvil. Si no puedes evitarlo usa el modo nocturno de las pantallas o gafas que bloqueen la luz azul para evitar que influya sobre la producción de melatonina (la hormona del sueño ).⁣ ⁣ ✨¿Qué y cuándo comes? Tu alimentación es un factor clave. Cenar temprano es una de las mejores estrategias, pero también hay que fijarse en los alimentos pues algunos pueden ayudarte a dormir mejor o peor.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ✨Higiene mental: la meditación y la respiración son dos armas maravillosas contra el insomnio. ✨👀 Sleep / Insomnia 👀✨ . . Day 8️⃣ of @amotherswords #photochallenge #mymotherhoodmyway . SLEEP, SLEEP, SLEEP. For me sleep has massively changed since having a baby and its probably the think i miss the most from pre baby days. . The early days its was constant breastfeeding and trying to stay awake whilst doing the night feeds, well I didn't always. There was a handful of times my husband would wake me. Dream feeding hit a new level. . Since being on solid food Roman has slept better. Since about 8 months he has continuously slpet through the night and naps regularly. So i feel lucky. However my ability to sleep has gone. I constantly feel tired but struggle to sleep at night and always wake up early in the morning sometimes before Roman. Any quiet baby free time is a battle of do I sleep, do chores or enjoy the peace and quiet. Its normally doing chores and tidying the house. . So in our house we have a baby who sleeps pretty well but a mammy who can't.
