M E D I T A T E When it comes to helping keep anxiety and depression at bay one of my personal favourites is meditation. Those of you that have trained with me know that I sound like a broken record about it, and the simple reason is because it works. I know from personal experience as I meditate daily. I started meditating in 2019 to cope with stress as well as lack of sleep from having a newborn baby at home. I have recommended it to clients for longer than that but was always in the camp of “its boring” and “I don’t need it”, but to be honest I’ve never looked back. Whether I meditator for 10, 20 or 30 minutes (depending on how much time I have ), I always feel refreshed, revitalised, clear and full of energy. I’ve even found it useful when having a bit of a brain block when writing programs, meal plans or trying to work out certain issues with clients. It bring me the “huzzah” moment. During meditation, at the front and mid of the brain theta brain waves increase which are our gateway to learning, memory and intuition, as well as indicating deep relaxation. At the back part of the brain, alpha waves are increased, which signify wakeful rest. It’s these waves of wakeful rest that can help a poor or short nights sleep. Meditation will not only decrease stress by shifting us from a sympathetic state (fight or flight ), into a parasympathetic state (rest and digest ), as well enhancing brain plasticity and improving memory, focus and cognition. My advice. If your new, skeptical or really can’t sit still for long, try guided meditation using an app and some headphones. I’ve used @1giantmind since the beginning of my meditation journey and continue too to this day, I’m also a slight creature of habit and it works for me. Give it a go for 14 days straight before you give up and jump off the bandwagon and let me know how you go. Stay tuned tomorrow for part 4 of “beat the lockdown blues”
