In communities, we lead with love.⠀ ⠀ Meanwhile, there is hate. Hate sows seeds of chaos and division. Through division, there is no unity; therefore, there is no community to be led. There is no leadership to be found in hate. For that reason, hate is jealous. Hate is bitter. Without a community, hate will seek to shield itself by inflating its ego and thrive in a world of narcissism, where no sense of community or outside perspective is needed. Hate will desperately seek to divide and dismantle unity...by weaponry of guns, clubs, force, words, oppression, or legislation.⠀ ⠀ I pity hate. It will never know love. It will never know community. It will never know that one can walk this earth without the burden of animosity, fear, anger, and judgement. Hate will never be free. ⠀ ⠀ I reflect on this picture, and see a community of love. A community composed of the very young black men that are the prime targets of hate. I smile because, even in a world of oppression, these men and all of us are more liberated than hate could ever be. The more hate attacks us and uses its strength to oppress us, the stronger we become. The more resilient we become as a community.⠀ ⠀ Hate, if only you would set down your heavy artillery (what a heavy burden to bear ). There is nothing to be feared, but everything to be gained...and just maybe you can find love beyond yourself and within a community.⠀ Miss you, Grandmother. I aspire to lead and live by your love. . . . . . #leahchase #dookychase #community #love #leadership #civilrights #neworleans #blacklivesmatter #blm #blackisbeautiful #unity #together #justice #unitedwestand ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

This is the Gumbo that some say fueled a revolution. It’s birthplace is Dooky Chase’s Restaurant which opened its doors for business in 1941. What was initially a sandwich shop and lottery ticket outlet in 1939 blossomed into a thriving bar and later a respected family restaurant in Treme. Founded by Emily and Dooky Chase, Sr., Dooky Chase’s Restaurant soon become the meeting place for music and entertainment, civil rights, and culture in New Orleans. When she died in June 2019 at age 96, Leah Chase was celebrated as a New Orleans legend, icon, and inspiration. During research for 2009’s animated “The Princess and Frog,” directors Ron Clements and John Musker called on Chase’s life story and culinary renown—a journey from French Quarter waitress to James Beard Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award recipient—as inspiration for the character of Tiana, Disney’s first African American princess. - Follow our link in profile for our newest First Draft story, where we reached out to @louisianaeatsnola host and author @poppytooker for her fondest Leah Chase memories—and a favorite recipe. #leahchase #creolecuisine #princessandthefrog #visitthnoc . 📸Image courtesy of Poppy Tooker

Known as the “Queen of Creole Cuisine,” Leah Chase has fed Quincy Jones, Jesse Jackson, Duke Ellington, Thurgood Marshall, James Baldwin, Ray Charles, Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama and countless others as Executive Chef of Dooky Chase’s Restaurant — one of the best-known and most culturally significant restaurants in New Orleans. Leah Chase has more recently served as the inspiration for Princess Tiana in Disney's Princess and the Frog. Born on January 6, 1923 in New Orleans, Chase was one of 14 children. She was raised in the small town of Madisonville, LA. There were no high schools for black children, so after sixth grade, Chase moved to New Orleans to live with an aunt. After completing high school, Chase had a colorful work history including managing two amateur boxers and becoming the first woman to mark the racehorse board for a local bookie. Her favorite job, though, was waiting tables in the French Quarter. It was here that she developed her love for food and feeding others. In 1946, she married local musician Edgar “Dooky” Chase Jr., whose father had opened a street corner stand selling lottery tickets and his wife’s homemade po’boy sandwiches. Eventually, Leah and Dooky Jr. took over the business, which by then had become a sit-down restaurant and a favorite local gathering place. In a town deeply divided by segregation, Dooky Chase’s Restaurant was one of the only public places in New Orleans where mixed race groups could meet to discuss strategy for the local Civil Rights Movement. Although such gatherings were illegal through most of the 1960s, Dooky Chase’s was so popular; it would have caused a public uproar if local law enforcement had interrupted the meetings. Black voter registration campaign organizers, the NAACP, backdoor political meetings and countless others often found a home at Dooky Chase’s, and Leah cooked for them all. #dookychase #princessandthefrog #leahchase #louisiana #NewOrleans #tremeneighborhood #treme #blackhistory #swipeleft

This was taken in December we had a great conversation about the foundation and supporting the next generation of chefs with education. We also talked about my Dad since she always had to make fish especially for him every time he’d come in for a luncheon (since he is a pescatarian ). She literally said, “Your Dad and his fish!” The grace of her life will carry on in all the lives that she touched, inspired and fed in food and in wisdom. She was not just one thing. Words fail so greatly short to capture all the spaces she occupied, shaped, pioneered, and transformed in time. My prayers and condolences go out to her family and loved ones. I am deeply thankful for this moment in December. May she rest in absolute eternal peace.🕊 “Food builds big bridges..If you can eat with someone, you can learn from them, and when you learn from someone, you can make big changes. We changed the course of America in this restaurant over bowls of gumbo. We can talk to each other and relate to each other when we eat together."

This is a heavy moment for me. Leah Chase is one of the most inspirational people I have ever met. She is the epitome of looking on the bright side. I could write a thousand words going into detail of her accomplishments and her beautiful story. Do yourself a huge favor and just look up Leah Chase if you want to be very proud of someone today. I had the opportunity to meet Ms. Chase three times. Each time was just as special as the last. It was an honor to take your portrait. Thank you for your words of encouragement and unshakeable passion. New Orleans has lost a beautiful soul and an inspiring woman. I was blessed to have known Mrs. Leah Chase through our church in the small town of Madisonville. She and her sister Mrs. Cleo would would serve their soulful fare at our church gala. There’s was always a lot of laughter coming from that corner where the two sisters greeted everyone with a lot of sass and big smile. I hope to be as sassy as you, Mrs Leah, when I grow up. Thank you for the laughter, the inspiration and the gumbo z’herbes on Holy Thursday.

Her legacy lives on in the menus, minds, and taste buds of New Orleans. Thank you Leah Chase for cultivating a flavor that will forever be a driving factor in our cuisine and the minds of the people that make New Orleans kitchens and restaurants so incredibly magical. • This is the stewed chicken and jambalaya on the lunch buffet at Dooky Chase's Restaurant just days after the legendary New Orleans Chef, Leah Chase, passed away. Her life is the epitome of what you can make here in this city of ours ... A whisper of passion and a determination to give back is all it took to make Leah a legend. She will be sorely missed by so many, but today we celebrate her life and the impact it had & will have on New Orleans forever. I'll never forget my time in her kitchen and her immense generosity, not only to share a bowl of whatever it was she was cooking, but her pearls of wisdom that fuel the drive. Never stop. • • • • #OneTimeInNOLA #NOLA #NewOrleans #OnlyLouisiana #VisitNewOrleans #IGersNOLA #IGersNewOrleans #Instafood #FollowYourNOLA #NOLAlove #thisisnola #504 #TeamPixel #InstaFood #LoveFood #Foodie #LeahChase #DookyChase #Legend #Chef #Chicken #Jambalaya

This woman is a legend. It was 10000 degrees in the New Orleans shade the day we decided to walk from our hotel to Dooky Chase on Holy Thursday. I had to have her famous Gumbo Z’Herbes, only made once a year on this day. Chef/Owner Leah Chase, was beaming as she stopped to chat with guests in between popping in and out of the kitchen. I had to say hello.... she was beyond lovely and sweet and made me promise to bring her some smoked salmon from Canada on my next trip. So grateful I had the honour of meeting her. “Food builds big bridges,” Chase said in a 2018 interview. “If you can eat with someone, you can learn from them, and when you learn from someone, you can make big changes. We changed the course of America in this restaurant over bowls of gumbo. We can talk to each other and relate to each other when we eat together." RIP Leah Chase ❤️
