This week has been trying my patience. A security breach affecting work + pre-teen hormones + 8th grade math + potty training + co-sleeping. I’m just done. . I’m trying to find better ways to manage my stress as I’ve given up my vices (alcohol and soda, 273 and 16 days ), but have yet to replace them with healthier options. For now I’ve been enjoying my “me time” by binging Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix after the kids go to bed, working my way through my self-help book shelf, and painting rocks. . I’m trying to end this week on a good note though. So, as much as I hate math, I’m at least grateful that Izzy’s lesson this week is on the only thing I remember (and was kind of good at ). And I’m grateful that Evelyn has been home and took an interest in potty training and has been extremely successful since Saturday morning. . Some days are tougher than others, for no real reason other than not having someone to tap in so you can take a shower without a 3 year old pulling back the curtain and laughing. But, in the mornings, when she rolls over and cuddles close and sings to me, or when I come downstairs in the morning to a sweet note, it makes the tension in my shoulders lessen. . Asking is not easy, especially for so many of us who were taught that it's actually rude, inappropriate, or wrong in some way to ask for what we want,need, and desire. And what happens then? Just a little reminder that having conversations, raising awareness and engaging in efforts regarding suicide prevention do not end with it being posted about less on social media or with it being the last day of #suicidepreventionmonth . This impacts more people than we'll ever know, on a daily basis. Suicidal ideation and mental health conditions present themselves very differently from one person to the next--physically, emotionally, and mentally. You don't know why your friend is "always in a mood" or why your cousin isn't texting you back or why a classmate doesn't want to hang out. Naturally, if things don't go as we planned, we have a tendency to get mad, dismiss these concerns and make it about ourselves. Instead: take a moment, step back and think about them. Check in on your friends who "have it all together," be there for the good times and the bad, and support your loved ones even when they seem "distant" or "uninterested." And for those who are struggling: you are not alone. You are loved, valued and worthy. You are not a burden. You are not seeking attention. And you are brave for sharing your story or reaching out for help. Don't let anyone else make you think otherwise. Your health matters.. your voice matters. And your life matters. In continuing with the morning routine post from a couple days ago, I wanted to focus on our habits in the morning specifically with our cell phones. Do you fall asleep with your phone next to your bed? I can’t recommend enough to keep your phone in a different room. (Even if your phone is on silent, the alarm will still work. ) Most of us are guilty of reaching for our phone first thing in the morning, and endlessly scrolling, researching, answering emails, or reading the news.   Starting your day with this isn’t good! It increases our stress levels right off the bat, zaps our motivation, and can leave us feeling anxious and depressed. This is no way to start your day nor will it set you up for success. Give yourself a chance to ease into the day with a nice routine that doesn’t involve your cell phone. Read, journal, meditate, sip coffee or tea, move your body.  Set yourself up for success by thinking of what you’d like to accomplish  during the day and allow yourself a moment of calm and peace before you begin. This is an absolute game changer!  Start tonight by leaving your phone out of your bedroom and don’t look at it for at least 30 minutes, if not more. I just know your tomorrow will get off to such a better start because of it!

Juggling a household & an online business ain’t easy. Here are a few ideas to help ease the chaos. ⁣ ⁣ You’re ambitious, tenacious, hard working... you most likely think about your business all day.... ⁣ ⁣ However, you aren’t getting much of anything done. ⁣ ⁣ You’ve tried hiding in the bathroom, waking up early to avoid children, parking in a Dunkin Donuts parking lot, staying up late, or trying to get work done during nap time. ⁣ ⁣ You gotta get that work done. I get it. ⁣ ⁣ However, it never feels fully good to you. You aren’t getting into that zone of genius that creates epic SH*T! ⁣ ⁣ With my clients, since they are all moms, just like you, we come up with a plan.⁣ ⁣ Here are a few ideas 👇⁣ ⁣ ❇️ Set boundaries with your family - “During this time from X to Z, you can’t enter my office.”⁣ ❇️ Get help. Your partner (or grandparent ) will need to help. I know it’s hard to ask, but you can’t do it alone. ⁣ ❇️ Leave the house. Your environment is possibly killing your creative energy flow. ⁣ ❇️ Create alone time hours for your kids. If they are a little older & can play independently, create that time & space for them. ⁣ ⁣ You can’t create more time during the day, so it’s extremely important to be as productive as you can be during the time you are given.⁣ ⁣ Tell me, where’s your favorite hiding spot to get your work done? ⁣ ⁣

Just because a person works as a physician doesn’t mean that they are immune to getting the flu or sustaining an injury. Just because a person works as a dentist doesn’t mean they will never be in need of dental work. Yet people continue to struggle with the idea that therapists also seek out therapy. My work as a therapist does not excuse me from life’s struggles or pain. I do not get a free pass on trauma or loss just because I work in the field of healing. “Toxic” is a buzzword that can be found in all corners of the internet. We label people as toxic. We label relationships as toxic. We label environments as toxic. And while many people, relationships and environments have toxic elements, I find helpful to take a step back and examine why these toxic traits exist. Maybe a person is reenacting behaviors that were modeled by a caregiver in early childhood. Maybe a person is interacting with the world from a place of deep and unhealed trauma. Maybe a person operates in survival mode and therefore is physically or emotionally unavailable. Maybe a person has unaddressed mental health challenges that creates difficulties in things like communication or emotional expression. I don’t believe people are born with toxic traits but instead develop many of these characteristics through difficult life events. Parents experience so much undue shame and embarrassment when accessing mental health support for their child. From scheduling an assessment to rule out learning differences to calling to make a therapy appointment, parents have often disclosed how much fear or resistance they felt upon meeting with a mental health provider. Fear that their child’s mental health struggles are due to a deficit in parenting. Guilt that their child has struggles that as a parent they are unable to fix or resolve. Embarrassed by the idea that their child might be viewed as having “issues.” But the truth of the matter is, there is absolutely nothing shameful about accessing professional support in an effort to help your child. Not being believed is one of the most painful positions we can find ourselves in when struggling with our mental health. We muster up the courage to share our emotional distress only to be told it’s not true or real. Sometimes blatantly dismissed while other times more discreetly with comments such as, “But you don’t look depressed.” I am still not completely sure why we as a society continue to invalidate other people’s pain. Maybe because it makes us uncomfortable to know someone we care about is struggling. Maybe because it brings up our own emotional wounds. At the end of the day, it’s never okay to question someone’s mental or emotional experience. Her muted blond hair neatly tied up in a ponytail. Her favorite coffee order each week on our hour long carpool to internship. Her deep love for all things dogs, especially her own. It was spring of our second year of graduate school when I stopped by her desk in the library to complain about our ethics paper due at the end of the week. She had already turned it in and of course she had I thought to myself, she was the smartest person in our cohort. We touched base about our weekend plans as we walked out of the library and into class. And then she was gone. I didn’t understand. Where were the warning signs we were all trained in? Why didn’t she say something? The remainder of that school year was blurred with tears, confusion and more questions than answers. Thursday is World Suicide Prevention Day and my friend will be on my mind and in my heart. A gentle reminder that even though we are in the mental health profession, we are not immune to struggling with our own mental health. In fact research states that mental health professionals may be at an increased risk for suicide due to the nature of our work (Professional Psychology: Research and Practice Vol. 42, No. 3 ). So today and every day, let us use our voices to shed light on suicide prevention and the importance of including mental health professionals in these conversations. #worldsuicidepreventionday #wspd
