#F1 #OnThisDay #CanadianGP #Canada #GillesVilleneuve #Ferrari

Happy birthday to Mr. Thomas Stearns Eliot! Eliot was part of a generation of poets and artists who were bored—and frustrated, and desperate for something new. I don’t know if it was some sort of a residual discontent hanging over from the First World War, but it sent many of them in desperate pursuit of something truly original. They went to great lengths—maybe even absurd lengths—to break the mold of what art meant (as a point of reference, Google Gertrude Stein’s Tender Buttons ). But the thing I admire most about Eliot—one of the most respected and most loved voices of this age—is that he had a deep appreciation—a truly revolutionary respect—for tradition. It’s easy to be beguiled by the charms of originality for the sake of originality. Simple boredom and the nagging fear of mundaneness can send any artist running blind into the arms of new for the sake of new and different for the sake of different. But Eliot understood that the greatest artistic talents have not stood alone—they have taken part in a tradition. They have had, what he called “a perception, not only of the pastness of the past, but of its presence.” They didn’t ignore or shun their predecessors. Eliot believed that every newly created work of art entered into a conversation with everything that went before it. And that conversation is where meaning happens. The greatest artistic talents haven’t sought to drown out all the other voices of the past, in order to draw the most attention to themselves—they have listened and answered back. I don’t know which is harder, frankly—to ignore the greats or to attempt a reply—but I find Eliot’s philosophy incredibly comforting in the moments when “originality anxiety” sets in. “We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time.” T. S. Eliot, “Little Gidding”

#Onthisday In 1818, the first #transfusion in Great Britain using human blood (as opposed to animal blood ) took place at Guy's Hospital, London, by Dr. James Blundell. The patient, Mr. Brazier, was beyond hope of recovery due to incurable scirrhous disease of the pyloric orifice of the stomach, but he was anxious that the procedure be tried. Using an #instrument of his own design, the doctor transfused of between 12 to 14 ounces of donated human blood into a vein in the patient's arm. For 30 or 40 minutes there seemed benefit, as his #pulse and body #temperature increased. However, he died 56 hours after the treatment. Ten #years later, Dr. Blundell saved a patient's life with a blood transfusion, but by then, Dr. #Doubleday had already, in 1825, become the first to achieve a life-saving success.

September 27, 1996 - The Taliban militia take Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, ending the Afghan Civil War and establishing the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. At its peak, the Taliban controlled 90% of the country. In 1979 the Soviets occupied Afghanistan and the U.S. government covertly supplied the Islamic Mujahideen Afghani resistance fighters with millions of dollars in aid including school books of extremist Islamic teachings (including violence and jihad ) to radicalize the children against the Soviets. With additional support from Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, the Mujahideen expelled the Soviets in 1992. The country then fell into Civil War. The Taliban ("students" ), a Sunni Islamic fundamentalist military organization, was founded by Mullah Omar in 1994 with members of the Mujahideen and the U.S. radicalized children who had now grown up. The Taliban was dramatically successful and won many battles against both the government and the rebels. Many cities surrendered without a fight as the Taliban were popular and known for stamping out corruption and curbing lawlessness. Upon coming into power, Mullah Omar, heavily supported by Pakistan, instituted strict Sharia law (including brutal treatment of women and the banishing of hobbies ) and expelled the UN and all NGOs (despite desperate need for help after 20 years of continuous war devastating the country ). In December 2000, the UN Security Council issued severe sanctions against the Taliban for massacring civilians, failing to address humanitarian needs, and providing safe haven for known terrorists including Osama bin Laden and his terrorist organization al-Qaeda ("The Foundation" ). The Taliban lost power in December 2001 with the U.S. led invasion into the country and now the Taliban conduct guerrilla warfare against the Afghani government.

September 26 On this day in 1992: Jimmy Connors defeated Martina Navratilova, 7-5, 6-2 in a “Battle of the Sexes” exhibition match in Las Vegas. The match was hosted by Caesars Palace with a sellout crowd of 13,832 for the pay-for-view TV event. Each player was rumored to have been guaranteed $500,000 with the winner taking home an additional $500,000. Connors, who has since spoken about his gambling addiction, bet $1 Million that he would not only beat Navratilova but that he would win in straight sets and lose no more than 8 games. He saw himself down early 1-3 to Navratilova but rallied back to ultimately win the match in straight sets. The rules of the match allowed for Navratilova to use half of the doubles alley and permitted Connors with only one serve. This was the first and last of the “Battle of the Sexes” exhibition matches since 1973 when Bobby Riggs played and beat Margaret Court, 6-2, 6-1 in May of 1973 then played and lost to Billie Jean King, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in September of 1973. September 24 On this Day in 1934: Babe Ruth played his last game as a New York Yankee. Ruth, who was notoriously sold to the Yankees by then owner of the Boston Red Sox, Harry Frazee, concluded his 15 year stay with the Yankees before heading to the Boston Braves for part of the 1935 season in which he then retired. Ruth won 7 World Series championships in his career: 3 with the Red Sox, 4 with the Yankees. The curse of the Great Bambino famously saw the Red Sox go 86 years without a World Series Championship after selling Ruth to the Yankees, terrorizing Red Sox fans for decades. Ruth’s arrival in NY helped the Yankees draw over a million fans to their then home, the Polo Grounds in Upper Manhattan (out drawing the NY Football Giants ). The Yankees then built the original Yankee Stadium opening in 1923 which became known as the “House that Ruth Built” holding the honor of being referred to as “The Cathedral of Baseball” by baseball fans nationwide. Babe Ruth is forever cemented in baseball history books as a legend of the game. . . . . . #todayinsportshistory #sportshistory #todayinsports #sportshistorytoday #yesterdaysportstoday #Historysports #sports #history #onthisdate #thisdateinsports #thisdate #today #onthisdayinsports #onthisday #halloffame #mlb #yankees #baberuth #homerun #baseball #yankeestadium #nyc #bronxbomers

Kuiper poses with a camera used in the first televised presidential debate, which aired live 60 years ago today on CBS Chicago. Thanks to the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago for allowing us to visit after hours in 2018. Note: Kuiper is not a task-trained service dog; he received special permission to visit. On this day in 1960, JFK and Nixon faced off on live national TV in what would be the 1st of four "Great Debates." There's a persistent belief[1] that those listening to the 1st debate on the radio thought that Nixon had won, while those watching on TV thought that Kennedy had won. That probably wasn't entirely true; in any case, since 87% of American households had a television by 1960[2], the vast majority of folks watched it on TV. In the end, the 1960 election was exceedingly close, with Kennedy winning by a razor thin margin of 119,000 votes (49.7 to 49.6 percent. )  It's hard to measure precisely how much the Great Debates effected the outcome, but it's unambiguous that TV debates changed society forever. On October 30, 1960, historian Henry Steele Commager denounced the format of the debates in the NYT.[3] "But there are even graver reasons why this process is not only misguided but pernicious -- why it is not only tactically bad but strategeically dangerous. It encourages the American public to believe that there are no questions - no issues before us - that are so difficult that they cannot be disposed of in two or three minutes of off-the-cuff comment..." "So great, and so intense, is public concentration on this game of wits that people are reluctant to listen to slower, longer and more serious discussions of great public questions...the glib, the evasive, the dogmatic, the melodramatic, the meretricious will drive out the sincere, the serious, the judicious, the sober, the honest in political discussion...The present format of TV 'debate' is designed to corrupt the public judgment, and, eventually the whole political process."
